The First Day of School: A New Semester Unfolds at GTSI
On August 21, GTSI held its welcome ceremony for the 2023 Fall Semester.
The auditorium of GTSI was brimming with new students. With curious eyes, they gazed toward the podium, each seemingly sharing a common question: What lies ahead for me in this place?
The inception of the new semester swung open the gateway to answering this question.
Transitioning from Unfamiliarity to Familiarity, Making New Friends, and Embarking on a Novel Journey
"We will deliver on this vision by building an outstanding and diverse community of learning, discovery, and creation in an inclusive and collaborative environment focused on innovation and access. " This encapsulates the global educational mission of the Georgia Institute of Technology.
For GTSI students, being in such a learning environment signifies that reading, taking exams, and obtaining a degree may only be a fraction of their graduate program. Equally significant is the process of forging connections, collaborating with peers, and engaging in the exchange of ideas across professions and cultures.
"Look to your right, and then to your left. The classmate sitting next to you at this moment might be your lifelong friend".
This welcome message, delivered to all the new students during the welcome ceremony, elicited smiles and exchanged glances from many.
Some of them were acquaintances from their undergraduate years, others were new roommates for the current semester. Within days of starting the semester, they had become inseparable companions. For others, their initial eye contact might have been a bit awkward at first, but a smile always managed to break the ice.
During the session for open sharing, Vijay Muppalla and Wang Xingjian, new students majoring in Computer Science, and Brooke Leah Conway, an incoming Analytics student, took the initiative to come onto the stage for self-introductions. They expressed their hope to make new friends and have more interaction with fellow students.
Getting to know new friends, opens up a new world, broadens your horizons and unlocks a wealth of opportunities - all right there, sitting next to you.

At the welcome ceremony, Li Xinzhuo, representing the new Industrial Design students, shared her thoughts.
Before the semester officially began, she had thoroughly familiarized herself with GTSI's various aspects and explored the campus during the Campus Open Day in June.
Now, at the beginning of her academic studies at GTSI, Li Xinzhuo shared her expectations with her fellow students as they formally embarked on a new chapter in their educational journey:
"Before coming to GTSI, each of us had different experiences, dreams, and an unwavering pursuit of knowledge. And now, I believe that many of us share the same sentiment, eager to immerse ourselves in a community at GTSI that is rich in curiosity and innovation".
Being part of this community means occasionally turning our attention to others and considering whether we can use the knowledge we've gained to contribute to our immediate community, organization, and even the broader world. Can we be innovative? Can we make a difference to the world?
Li Xinzhuo said, "We are all the sole authors of our own destiny. As we write new chapters in our lives here at GTSI, I hope we will always bear in mind that our journey, underfoot, is not only about personal success or failure, but also about the potential impact it may have on countless others".
Once again, a warm welcome to all our new students!
